2001 Uni Open Champions, Linda Fallon and John James
470 individual players competed in the Open. This was a slight decrease on 2000 numbers but a record 103 players competed in the Open Men's Singles. The nett decrease was due to low entries in the C Grade and D Grade events. The total value of the prize money, trophies and prizes was over $9,000.
Again, the Club utilised the TENNIS ONE promotional mail-out in June to send the tournament entry form to over 4,000 individual players in Brisbane as well as every registered professional Tennis coach and every Tennis Centre. The Club provided considerable assistance in setting up the TENNIS ONE promotional database but the benefits for the University Open ftilly justified the effort.
Club members who won events in the University Open were: Donald Nicol (Special Men's Doubles), Steven Koch & Karyn Webster (Special Mixed Doubles), Elizabeth Hay (A Grade Ladies' Singles), Joseph Sorbello (B Grade Men's Singles), Mart Hardcastle (B Grade Men's Doubles), Sarah Lankowski (B Grade Ladies' Doubles), Judith Rodins (C Grade Ladies' Singles), Yaramah Zalucki & David Earl (C Grade Men's Doubles), Judith & Anita Rodins (C Grade Ladies' Doubles), Louise McNamee (D Grade Ladies' Singles) and Louise McNamee & Monica Harley (D Grade Ladies' Doubles).
The key workers involved in running the tournament were Fiona Austin, Gail Bates, Doug Bergman (Tournament Director), Ibrahim Diallo, David Earl, Sandy Greenwood and Ross Markwell.
The dates for the 2002 tournament will be 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28 July and the open events will again carry the status of being the Queensland Open Championships.
