Club Information
Where & When?
The University of Queensland Wakeboard and Waterski Club is located on campus at St Lucia, in the UQ Boat shed, on Sir William MacGregor Drive.
How to get there: When driving down Sir Fred Schonell Drive towards UQ in St Lucia, go straight through the first roundabout, then left at the 2nd roundabout, right at the 3rd roundabout, then the boat shed is immediately on the left, on the riverside.
When does it operate? The club runs every Sunday, year round, from 10am. There are a few exceptions to this rule, usually when other club events have been planned, including camping and houseboat trips. Once you become a member, you will receive a weekly email newsletter to keep you up to date with the club schedule.
Please note: While the boat is usually in the water all day, if it is particularly busy then members who don't arrive until the late afternoon may not get a turn. The club runs on a first in first served basis, so it is recommended that you head to the club in the morning to guarantee your ride.
How Much?
Club Membership for 2009 is as follows:
UQ Students: $60
All others: $120
(this includes students from other universities, UQ staff and past students, and all others).
Note that membership is for the calendar year only, and will expire at the end of December 2009. Discounts apply to membership fees after midyear--please ask at the club for details.
Once you are a member, skiing/riding costs are $1/min of boat engine time. The boat driver will tell you how long this was when you finish your turn.
People who aren't sure if they wish to join the club may try wakeboarding or skiing one time only, at a non-members rate of $2/min.
What's Included?
Who Can Join?
Anyone may join the UQ Wake and Ski Club, however the club is targeted at UQ Students and there are a large number of UQ past students and staff as members also. There are a smaller number of members who are wake/ski enthusiasts from the wider community. The club welcomes anyone who is interested in having a go at the sport! It is, however, recommended that people have a reasonable level of swimming ability and water confidence before joining – no other experience is necessary.
To join, just show up at the club on any Sunday and ask to become a member. Please note that the club does not have EFTPOS or credit facilities, so please bring sufficient cash for membership and your ride. All skiing/wakeboarding must be paid for on the day.
What Should I Bring?
The club provides almost everything you will need, but if you have your own ski/wake equipment, you're welcome to bring it along.
You will also need:
- Swimwear
- Boardshorts (ski pants are available if you don't have any)
- Hat and Sunscreen
- Money (the club only accepts cash, so please be prepared to pay on the day)
Volunteers
The club is run by a group of dedicated volunteers who put a lot of time and effort into making sure members have a great time on the water.
The club is always looking for new people to help out, so if you'd like to get involved, please make sure you let someone on our club committee know!
