Houseboats
This is the most popular weekend of the semester, where we hire two luxury houseboats, cruise the Coomera River for the weekend, and party/relax/ski/wakeboard/tan/party until we drop. Each semester, there are 24 spots available and once it's booked out that's it, so make sure you watch the newsletter to find out when to book your spot. The weekend includes houseboat hire plus all your skiing/wakeboarding for the weekend; you just have to bring your own food and drinks. The boats are hired from a marina that's a 45min drive south of Brisbane...but don't worry, we arrange lifts for those who don't have cars. We get on board on Friday afternoon/night and come home Sunday afternoon. Saturday night is the famous YUKKA theme party which has been described as the best party in the world.
What To Bring
You need to bring food and alcohol for the whole weekend with you since there are no shops at the marina and once we leave the dock we'll be in the middle of nowhere for the whole weekend. Both houseboats have a BBQ on the roof and a full size kitchen with fridge and stove but no microwave oven. Bringing an esky or cooler between 2-3 people is a good idea to keep drinks in as the fridges usually get rather packed with food.
There is a bed for everybody on board so everyone will get a bed whether it be a permanent bed in one of the rooms or one of the fold outs in the lounge. The beds all come with sheets/blankets etc so you don't have to bring anything other than food, alcohol, swimmers, your outfit for Sat night & 6 lemons (read on).
Costume Party
The Saturday Night party is always a theme party so everyone needs to get creative with their costumes. Remember this is a wake & ski club party so the main idea is to look as stupid as possible. If you can’t figure out a costume just google the theme and you'll get plenty of ideas. Dress to impress!
Lame costumes will not be tolerated--wear them at your own risk as this often results in the wearer of said lame costume going for an unexpected swim!
Yukka
During the Saturday night houseboat party EVERYBODY on board drinks Yukka. Don't worry if you don't know what Yukka is because you will like it (believe us everybody who has tried it loves it). As well as your boat fees you have to bring a bottle of Vodka and 6 lemons each for the Yukka buckets. We'll supply the other Yukka ingredients. Don't worry if you don't like Vodka as Yukka does not taste like Vodka at all & even if you intend not to drink Yukka you will end up drinking it because it's so good.
Directions
We leave from the Gold Coast City Marina and the Coomera Houseboats docks are actually on the far side of the main marina so don't drive into the main marina gates.
Full directions to get to the Marina:
- Head towards the Gold Coast and take the Dream World exit off the freeway (exit number 54)
- Drive along the service Rd past the front of Dreamworld and take a left in to Beattie Rd
- After the bridge turn left at the roundabout into Waterway Dr
- Follow the road past the marina to the end and turn Right into Shipper Dr. Go to the end and you're there.
Bring Everything You Need
Remember there are no shops close to the marina and once we leave the dock we will be in the middle of nowhere for the rest of the weekend so bring everything you need with you. We'll be leaving the dock at 8:00 Sat morning so there is no time for shopping on Saturday morning.
If this all sounds like a great weekend then you are right! Houseboat trips are awesome fun.
Camping at Lake Moogerah
Once a semester, the club heads down to Lake Moogerah, which is a nice fresh water lake 1 1/2 hours drive west from Uni. The club has its own camping spot by the lake where you can relax under the trees, go hiking, swim, have tube battles, wakeboard & ski all weekend. During semester 1, we spend the long Easter weekend here; during semester 2, head up on a Friday night and leave Sunday afternoon.
We do camp on this trip so people need to take a tent and sleeping bag. If you don't have your own camping gear let us know as you can usually jump in with somebody who has spare room in their tent (better chances if you are good looking). Although it is camping, there are shops 10min down the road in Aratula so it's not overly remote and there are showers and toilets on site. Skiing/riding will be normal club rates and camping is usually $10 per person no matter how many nights you stay. Non members are welcome; it will just cost them $15. This is to pay for fuel to tow the boats out there as well as the lake membership fees the club has to pay.
Just like houseboats, it's pretty easy to get a ride with someone else that's driving; just let us know beforehand if this will be the case.
Directions to Moogerah (for those driving themselves) :
- Head out of town west along Ipswich road.
- Dont take the Toowoomba turn off as you'll get super lost.
- Do take the Warwick turn off.
- Follow the highway for 45min or so past Amberley and through other small towns.
- DO NOT follow the signs to Lake Moogerah as they'll take you to the wrong side of the lake.
- When you get to Aratula you are getting close.
- Drive through Aratula. Go past the pub on the left as you leave town and keep going.
- 10min past Aratula take the big signposted left to Spicers Gap and Lake Moogerah Rd.
- 800m along this road turn left in to Ski Zone Rd (dirt road - easy to miss).
- Follow this for 1km through the gate and you'll see some small huts/houses on your right. Stay on the track.
- When the track comes out between the houses and the lake is in front of you, look to your right 200m and we'll be camping there under the trees.
- We are easy to find as we are the only ones who camp.
Christmas Camping at Somerset Dam
Our Christmas trips are massive and now Somerset Dam is close to full there is way more calm fresh water to be enjoyed. Somerset Dam is about a 1 1/2 hour drive north west of UQ and most of us head out there on the Friday afternoon/night although you can turn up and leave whenever you want over the weekend.
We camp by the shore of the fresh water lake so as well as being great water conditions for skiing/riding it's a nice spot to swim and relax. In addition, we usually take the tubes up so we can have an all in tube battles to crown a new tube king! Since we do stay at a public camping ground, it costs $23 per night for a 2 person camp site. That is a cost you cant get around because if you don't pay you cant get in past the locked gate. If you are going to drive up there late Friday night you can pre book and get a pin code to get in the gate after hours; to do this, please visit the campground website.
Skiing/riding is at normal club rates although everybody who goes behind the boat has to pay an additional $10 for the weekend ($15 for non members)to cover petrol to tow the boat up and back and lake fees.
There is a small town 15min down the road where we usually go for dinner and the odd supplies for food/drinks, but we recommend that you bring most of your supplies as it'll get a bit expensive to buy all of them there!
